AMONG CATS AND BOOKS

Medusa Class

Gianlorenzo Bernini. Cabeza de Medusa. Roma, Museos Capitolinos

They call your survival a curse, your face a weapon, your body a trophy.

They are all wrong.

Starting Equipment: Heavy veil, polished bronze mirror, short sword, chisel and hammer.

Starting Skills: Refusing demands, spotting ill intent, holding your ground.

A: Serpent Crown, The Gaze
B: In the Mirror
C: Stone Sisters
D: No Trophy

Serpent Crown: Seven serpents live upon your head. They love you. They drink tears from your cheeks and watch while you sleep. At the first sign of danger, they rise as one. They see in every direction and reach wherever a hand might. You cannot be surprised by anything they see. They hiss at the devout and men who think wanting something makes it theirs.

The Gaze: Your gaze is harmless whilst veiled. When unveiled, those meeting your eyes while enacting violence against you must Save. On a failure, the offending part turns to stone. A hand closed around a blade, a tongue spitting venomous words, a foot planted upon your chest. If they persist, they must Save again. A second failure turns them wholly to stone. Partial stone softens at sunrise. The wholly petrified await your forgiveness. Those who look away or fight blind are safe.

In the Mirror: Your reflection does not obey the surface. Those watching you through a mirror or polished metal see it turn towards them. They may look away. Otherwise, they meet your Gaze. Once per day, you may shatter such a reflection from within. Its shards strike the watcher as a dagger.

Stone Sisters: Statues speak to you when no one else is listening. Touch a statue made from a living person and they wake beneath the stone. Their eyes first, then the mouth. The rest follows slowly. They remain awake until sunset. Before then, you may return them to flesh. One of your serpents turns to stone in their place and does not wake again.

No Trophy: Your body cannot be made useful to another. Anything severed from you turns to dull stone in their hands. Portraits made without your consent lose their faces. Statues split across the throat. Mirrors used to capture your likeness show only the room behind you. A likeness freely given remains alive. You may see and speak through it. Once only, you may open its eyes and use your Gaze through it. Afterwards, the likeness closes its eyes forever.
